Amsterdam one of my favorite cities in the Netherlands. It is the city of freedom with an extensive canal network and narrow façade houses. The perfect city for your holiday or weekend city trip! As I mentioned before I love Amsterdam because there is so much to do and to see. I visit the capital of Holland at least once a week to take pictures or to play the tourist. However, the area around Amsterdam is also very pretty and there are some typical Dutch places which are worth seeing. In less than 60 minutes from Amsterdam by train or bus, you find the most beautiful and typical Dutch treasures.
1. Take a tour to the famous Windmills & Zaanse Schans
A definite must-see is the famous Dutch windmills in a picturesque village the Zaanse Schans. The Zaanse Schans is famous for its iconic windmills, factories, and workshops. You can admire the Zaanse Schans very well with an organized Amsterdam windmill tour. Imagine yourself in the peaceful and iconic countryside near Amsterdam with a view of beautiful windmills. The tour is such a great and very Dutch experience. It also includes a tasting of the local cheese at the factory, a workshop at one of the last traditional clog makers and the opportunity to take a look inside one of the many windmills! It is such a cool and totally Dutch experience, as a real Dutchie I would really recommend this tour when you are in Amsterdam.
2. Eat the famous Dutch herring in Volendam village
Another typical Dutch and nice thing to do is to visit Volendam village and eat the famous Dutch herring. Volendam is famous for its colorful and bustling harbor, delicious herring and traditional cuisine. It is an absolute gem of Holland! You can walk around the beautiful harbor, try all the delicious local food (including the herring) and experience a real Dutch village. You can visit Volendam from Amsterdam by train or bus or book the organized Amsterdam Windmill tour. This tour includes a visit to Volendam as well.
3. Visit the Tulip fields/ Keukenhof
Will you be visiting Amsterdam in the spring? Then make sure to visit Keukenhof/ Tulip fields. At Keukenhof, you will experience the most gorgeous views of the blooming Dutch tulips and tulip fields. Keukenhof is the most famous and largest flower park in the world and is located near Amsterdam. The best time to visit the tulip fields is in April and May.
